Abu Simbel

The monumental rock-cut temples of Ramesses II by Lake Nasser.

Abu Simbel

About this experience

Around 280 kilometres south of Aswan stand the two rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel. Four colossal seated statues mark the entrance to the Great Temple of Ramesses II. Inside, reliefs and columns lead towards a sanctuary known for its carefully planned alignment. Beside it is a smaller temple dedicated to Nefertari and the goddess Hathor.

When the Aswan High Dam was built, the rising waters of Lake Nasser threatened to flood the temples. An international project dismantled and rebuilt them on higher ground. Allow most of the day for this excursion; we can discuss driving time, departure, entrance tickets and any guiding when you enquire.
